So what is this site all about?

Well this is by no means my first foray into creating and maintaining my own website, just the latest. This website was created by me using good old-fashioned know how. I created this site because I wanted a public area to share stuff that I'm working on, or things that I have discovered.

This website was created using ASP.NET MVC 2 with a Microsoft SQL 2008 backend. I used to use SubSonic for all of my data access needs however I have switched to "rolling my own" data access solution. For editing HTML for the pages and blog entries I am using NicEdit. I'm using NicEdit because I happen to like it, and it is super easy to integrate. I have also added MetaWeblog API support so I can use applications like Windows Live Writer for adding and editing posts. For the little bit of AJAX behavior (see the comment system) that exists I used jQuery. I suppose I could have used ASP.Net AJAX but that just didn't seem as fun!

Why create your own CMS/Blog engine?

Simply put, because I like to make things. Not necessarily because I think that I can do a better job, but because I learn something with each project. Also, while reading over my daily array of programming blogs I came across this entry by Rob Conery in which he claim's "Luke had to build his own lightsaber - geeks should have to build their own blogs. And that should be their resume." The comments on that entry met with a little static but I find his reasoning sound. So here we are. A constant work in progress for a single client.
